The First Net-Zero Production in Israel: “ECHOES OF THE JORDAN”

We’re proud to announce a milestone in the Jordan ReWILD impact campaign:

One Atmosphere is partnering with KVS to make ECHOES OF THE JORDAN—our immersive documentary about the Jordan River and the story of climate and water in the Middle East—the first net-zero production in Israel, and among the first in the world.

KVS will provide independent, data-driven CO₂ accounting and reporting (Scope 1, 2, and 3), net-zero roadmapping, circularity strategies, and energy/microclimate analysis—measuring today’s footprint and guiding reductions going forward.

To reinvest directly in the film’s subject—the Jordan River—we purchased nature-based carbon removal credits through TERRRA, a carbon removal startup founded by KVS. In partnership with the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, Terrra is rewilding wetlands and agricultural areas at Kfar Ruppin in the Jordan Valley, restoring habitats as functioning carbon sinks, verified through on-site measurements, remote sensing, and AI.

We’re proud that our offsets are deeply tied to the documentary’s story: climate, water, and the restoration of the Jordan Valley. This reflects our studio goal: aligning creativity with tangible, measurable impact.

Returning to Aqaba's coral reefs after ten years was enlightening. The reefs here seemed better than a decade ago, but they still face formidable threats—climate change, rising ocean temperatures, coastal development, and pollution.

Recent research underscores rising Gulf of Aqaba temperatures due to climate change. Intriguingly, select coral species exhibit robust resistance to warming.

Aqaba and Eilat's reefs are ecologically interconnected. Ocean currents facilitate gene flow, enhancing their resilience. This highlights the urgent need for environmental cross-border cooperation and collaborative action on climate change.

As apex predators, great white sharks are perfectly adapted to their environment and play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy ocean ecosystem.

Nevertheless, popular media largely misunderstood and vilified these magnificent predators. The truth is sharks are not mindless killers, and attacks on humans are extremely rare.

Scientifically speaking, Sea Lions share many similarities with humans, particularly in terms of their social behavior and communication.

Studies have shown that they possess remarkable cognitive abilities, including recognizing individuals, forming social bonds, and even demonstrating self-awareness. They also communicate with each other through a variety of vocalizations and body language, much like humans do.

It's important to remember that these incredible animals are not just tourist attraction but essential members of their ecosystem. By understanding the similarities between humans and sea lions, we can better appreciate and protect their habitats.

A Domino Effect

Some 80 km south of the island of Cuba, there is an oceanic 'time machine' to how the Caribbean Sea used to be like in the past. It is called Jardines de la Reina.

One of the indicators that make this place so extraordinary and abundant with corals and wildlife is an animal humans have demonized for hundreds of years–the shark.

Sharks are considered 'keystone' species meaning that without them, the ecosystems around them could become unstable and face possible collapse–igniting a chain of events that will disturb the balance of the oceans – the life support system of the planet.

Interestingly, Fidel Castro's passion for scuba diving has led to the protection of the archipelago. And while the rest of the Caribbean has been developed and tourism boomed in its waters, Cuba kept preserving their reefs and sharks.

In the past three months, We had the opportunity of joining a new and innovative Impact Lab by @copro___ in Israel.

Throughout the lab, we had a chance to meet experts in this growing field and build a strategy for a future impact campaign for a new natural history series by @amberjackfilms and @sipurstudios.

As an industry, we hope to see more production companies prioritizing #ChangeMaking as part of their creative work. We believe this is the kind of leadership we need to see not only in the world of non-profits but also in the governmental and private sectors.

The Problem with Deforestation

The forests of Costa Rica are home to four world-known American Monkeys. One of them is the Capuchin Monkey.

His kind lives in tropical forests in groups of 6-40 members and calls the Costa Rican canopy “home.” Though the country has achieved international recognition for its reforestation efforts—after the low 40% drop in its original forest cover in 1987— some areas still suffer from a monoculture of palm oil plantations, which can look fine on the surface and yet poses a series problem.

Costa Rica holds some of the wildest and most biodiverse places on the planet. And even though many wild places need protection, some have a higher biodiversity value than others.

This mother Capuchin Monkey—as well as its forest neighbors—has a good reason for concern. She needs a diversity of trees, and monoculture poses a new threat. It is time for wildlife protection. We need more natural reserves, protected areas, and a more robust understanding of our shared future with the natural world.

A Humpback Greeting

Off of coasts of Baja California Sur—at the Sea of Cortez—humpback whales arrive every year after their long ocean journey. They will be traveling up to 48,000 km from their feeding grounds in the cold waters of the Polar regions—where they spend the summer—south to the waters of Baja California in order to give birth, breed, and nurse their young.

Why do Mobula rays jump?
In the south of Baja California, Mobula (Munkiana) tends to jump acrobatically on the sea surface. Scientists suspect they do so as a form of communication, to show off for a potential mate, or to get rid of parasites. For a short time of the year, they will put up a show that can be heard across the beaches of the Sea of Cortez.

CONNECTION

There is something remarkable about the connection we humans have with marine mammals. We share curiosity, joy, and emotional intelligence. An encounter such as this one feels like time slows down; our heartbeat rises, making one appreciate the beauty and wonder, which may be hard to find these days.

Though many of us moved into cities and drawn ourselves away from nature, I believe all of us need to make room for such encounters. Not only for the sake of connecting with our fellow animals but for finding a deeper motivation to act on and protect what sustains our life on this planet - the natural world.

Around the world, Coral Bleaching is already a common phenomenon. The Great Barrier Reef, the Caribbeans, the Indian ocean, and the list goes on.

Nevertheless, at the most northern point of the Red Sea, a tiny little gulf seems to adapt better than other places. The origin of the corals in the Gulf of Aqaba is from the southern straits of Bab al-Mandab.

These species of corals are adapted to higher water temperatures. These corals are now showing more resilience to higher temperatures, making them one of the last coral refuges to survive the oceans' heating.

Hawksbill sea turtles have lived on our planet since the last Mesozoic, more than 65 million years ago. And I had a chance to meet my first one in 2014.

This image was taken during my very first dive in the Caribbean. After a few months of traveling Latin America, I settled on a small island called Cozumel-best known for its unique diving experiences.

On my first dive, I encountered this friendly Hawksbill as if it welcomed me to the island, which became my home for almost a year.

Hawksbills are threatened by the loss of space, nesting, feeding habitats, and pollution, to name a few. In fact, the IUCN Red List considers them Critically Endangered worldwide.

Spring is coming, and so is the mating season for the Mantis. And that may reveal an unexpected surprise.
Females here are much bigger than males, which are frequently victims of sexual cannibalism.

Some females will prey on the male during intercourse, starting from eating its head, as it may release sperm faster than while alive.

What can we say? With Mantis, it can be tough love.

The world that corals reveal is an extraordinary one, yet very misunderstood. They need sunlight and warmth to survive, but too much of it may drive their rapid decline.

This image was taken as part of @orbzvi corals research while using ultra violate lights and a special filter to demonstrate the broader spectrum of colors invisible to the naked eye.

According to @noaa , More than 90 percent of the excess heat trapped in the Earth system due to human-caused global warming has been absorbed by the oceans. And for sensitive animals like corals, this may be a significant threat.

Yet, some reefs worldwide, specifically in the northern Red Sea, show more resilience than in other places. We should listen to scientists and turn their insights into environmental policies for wildlife protection that can ensure the survival of these magnificent species.

En Route.

In the past few weeks, Common Cranes started to arrive in the Hula Valley, a stopover at the upper stream of the Jordan River. With over 100,000 individuals crossing here every autumn on their way from cold Europe to the warmer African grounds.

But, this region is at the frontline of climate change, and as the deserts shift northward and limit the amount of fresh water available in the Lower Jordan River, we see more and more of them staying in our region.

Would their uncertain future be an opportunity for them to thrive, or is it posing new threats? Only time will tell.

52 hours. 14,000 burnt dunams.
On the frontline of climate change.

A couple of weeks ago, I was driving back home to my village in the Jerusalem mountains. Smoke was coming up from the sky, probably a wildfire.

Wildfires and not rare in this area; they happen every summer. Yet, most of the time, the damage counts about 100 dunams, and about 6,000 dunams fire is estimated to occur every 12 years. But this time, it was up to 14,000.

Following a line of mega-fire events in the Eastern Mediterranean, it was time for the green lung of the Judaean Mountains. The fire erupted on August 15th and lasted for four days in a row. It took 52 hours just to get control over it. Villages and a hospital have been evacuated, as the brave firefighters were battling day and night to gain control over the flames.

This was the view from outside the house.
Heavy smoke and warm solid winds lift sparks and ashes high in the air—a chaotic apocalyptic scene. What have we done?

It is genuinely heartbreaking to see such damage to these beautiful woods and the unique wildlife that calls them home.

As sad as it is, this will become the new norm if drastic action is not taken to address the climate crisis.
As the deserts shift northwards, we will experience warmer and drier conditions that make the forest more susceptible to mega-fire events. And in the most water-scarce region in the world - this becomes a multi-level security issue.

May the remaining precious natural world know better days.

A River in the Sky

It has been a cloudy sunrise over the Judaean mountains. Even in summer, some mornings are foggy, stopping the clouds and humidity from crossing the mountain range towards the Dead Sea, which is one of the reasons it is such a dry region.

So very often, corals are bring confused with being lifeless rocks or even plants. But the truth is that corals are vibrant living beings, yet being relatively tiny to the human eye, one might find it hard to imagine of this unique organism actually looks like.

Joining research @maayanneder, we used microscopes connected to a camera rig to see at a scale of tiny creatures. You can see the polyp with its mouth in the middle in this photo and its arm-like tentacles widely spread.

We still know very little about our corals and oceans. Still, new technology keeps pushing not only the borders of scientific achievements but the boundaries of our understanding of the wild.
